But even after three kids, my wife and I still can’t remember to stock the diaper bag, so packing extra bathing suits was not on our to-do list. This might be an obvious one for those used to vacations near water. Your room is just a place to crash after an amazing day at the water-park. But really, a getaway here isn’t about your room. At night, you’ll undoubtedly be jolted from sleep unless you can sleep through the apocalypse. But then there’s the a/c unit, which roars like a dragon. If you can reserve a room away from elevators and stairways, then you might get a reprieve from noise. We heard every footstep, stomp, yell, and conversation in the hallway and in the room above us. Don’t kid yourself: you’re not going to get perfect sleep.Load up the cooler and the backpack with food and drink, and you’ll save some time and money. We did, so this isn’t really a mistake we made so much as something we feel like we did right (a parenting miracle!). Did we survive with shoes and socks? Yes, but flip-flops would’ve been so much better. And we wish we had brought them for everyone. The bonus when grandparents join? Mommy and Daddy can enjoy the park without kids for a few hours, too. The place is big, so having those extra eyes kept everyone safe. With grandma and grandpa around as extra eyes and hands, we could keep everyone happy and maintain our sanity. There were times when our infant needed to be in one place (napping), when our daughter wanted to be on kid slides, and when our son wanted to join me on the bigger slides. If grandparents can join, then bring them along. Here are the six things we learned on our first getaway to Great Wolf Lodge: If you’ve never gone and are thinking about a family trip, learn from our mistakes. While we are only first-timers at Great Wolf Lodge, we learned plenty from our stay. A major plus for us: no sunscreen needed! My wife and I enjoyed ourselves, and the kids were on the move, smiling and laughing, the entire time. Food, hotel, water-park, and all kinds of fun under one roof? Count us in for an overnight stay. We finished our pizza and spent the remainder of our evening riding the waves in the wave pool. One recent weekend we decided on what is surely a classic for many families: Great Wolf Lodge in Mason, Ohio. If your kids are interested in trying the bigger slides, here’s a tip: there are different tubes are needed for different slides, so make sure to have the correct one before climbing to the top!Īfter a couple of hours of swimming, we had built up our appetites and opted to check out the Hungry as a Wolf pizza where you can order a pizza, along with other Italian dishes, drinks and snacks and enjoy dinner in the water park area. Although my boys were too big, there is also a kiddie area with four slides of its own and spray fountains. Unfortunately, the outdoor pool was closed the day of our visit. We also took several trips on the Crooked Creek (action river) and slid down a few of the smaller slides off of Fort Mackenzie (very wet jungle jim). The boys loved the Slap Tail Pond (wave pool) and spent the majority of their time riding the waves in the available inner tubes. The pool area is a balmy 84 degrees year round. We checked into the hotel and quickly made our way to the indoor water park. Great Wolf Lodge water park in Mason, Ohio
